Magical images have often been employed for the amiable purpose of winning love. Thus to shoot an arrow into the heart of a clay image was an ancient Hindu method of securing a woman's affections; while the Chippeway Indians used to prick the hearts of images of those whose love they wished to win and insert magical powders into the punctures, meanwhile addressing the effigies by the names of the persons they represented and bidding them requite their affection. Similarly too ancient witches and wizards used to melt wax in fire in order to make the hearts of their sweethearts melt of love. Such customs still commonly observed in some parts of Catholic Europe, are interesting because they shew how in later times magic comes to be incorporated with religion. Why me? Why do the things which happen to me... happen to me? I understand that I am patterns and impulses... waves and particles... actions and reactions... nothing can happen to me which I have not already given my permission to. This is hard to understand. It has to do with belief systems and symbology and out and back. It has to do with giving and receiving. It has to do with transmitting and receptivity. I am a wave which keeps moving outward until I receive it on the other end. I am a particle which is ever inward, waiting for it to come back again. It seems unbelievable that I am responsible for my Universe and yet comforting. It is just so hard to pick and choose how much of what I wish to believe. A memory of the past exists only in the "now". It has no power from the past but it has power in the "now". What ever effects exist from a memory as a template which vibrates a pattern within one's life, it is happening in the now. Any change in one's life due to the pattern from the past can only happen in the "now" as well. So when one wants to change the effects of the happenings of the past, it must be done in the "now". You can never change the past, you can only change the "now". In Absolute Reality there is no past, no future in the sense as we think it is, but rather only the Infinite Now. Often times I find those interested in the Fourth Way really do not understand what it means. They read the books and they memorize things said by various people and yet when it comes to really understanding what it means to do "The Work", they are bewildered. I am going to give an example of "doing the Work" and you can test it on your self. Pick something you feel you need to get done but just can't seem to get around to doing it. Do it. That's right. Pick that one thing and put it in your mental priority basket and see to it that it is done as soon as possible. Don't jeopardize your job or your marriage. Be practical, be pragmatic. But do this chore and observe your emotions which flutter up around you like a bevy of butterflies and account for them to deal with later. This would be a Fourth Way exercise. It is my opinion that everyone on the left is paranoid about the right and that everyone on the right is equally paranoid about everyone on the left. It is an illness which has to do to states of consciousness and the transition we are undergoing at this juncture in human history. Just as the male must give in to the female and vice versa so too is this opposition of thinking in a political sense indicative of unresolved human duality which fears giving up its own control for something higher which is its ultimate divinity and destiny. Politics is not something which can honestly be measured by the left or the right. Politics cannot be one way or the other and actually work. It will always be imbalanced. We operate within a two party system because we exist in a dualistic state of consciousness. The right and the left are as the male and the female, the above and the below, the east and the west, the yin and the yang. This polarization creates discord and blocks the natural flow of consciousness and though there might be overlap and blending, still there is resistance to the Oneness which is what truly operates in the background. Most people identify so strongly with a party or a political direction that it becomes more of their own personal identity than even spiritual studies or independent thinking that might really be who they are, though usually depending on how one leans in terms of their consciousness, likewise, they will gravitate toward that type of political persuasion. This duality is destroying the planet, not one party over another, not the left or the right. Every world religion is full of differing sects. All of these have their psychological interpretation. There is another important class of religio-philosophical movements of modern times which demands special attention. Those religious movements referred to as evangelism make their appeal almost entirely to the emotions. They generally misinterpret their own emotional outbursts as the work of the divine spirit. They believe and pray and exhort, and read the Bible and sing. They seldom think. They have faith. But there is another class which makes its appeal more directly to the intellect, and it seeks substantiation from science. Among them may be mentioned Max Heindel, Rudolph Steiner, Ouspensky, Krishnamurti, Vivekananda and Hermann Keiserling. These men all endeavor to inculcate some aspect of truth, seeking reality in the spiritual nature of man and the universe, while at the same time they regard the physical world as more or less illusory. The many selves, or the many "I's" a person begins to realize all have varied personalities. Generally, like Sybil they become buffers between the other selves. An integrated personality for the ego is often the harbinger of doom. It is death that the ego fears most. It feels that the only thing which gives it life is control and that to lose control is to die. This is why the subconscious mind becomes so clever in controlling the "machine" as Gurdjieff called it, to maintain its grip on the mind, body and soul of a person even though that person is the self of its own self. The world is in upheaval because consciousness is in upheaval. By this I am referring to the collective unconscious. Just as we as the "human" role has an identity crisis due to changes unfolding world wide, this is also reflected in the collective of mankind as well as the earth changes which mirror the turmoil of our consciousness. Our "world" reflects all that we believe which creates a place we live in. Thus as we feel our inner selves feel stress and we react and respond in different ways, so too does the entire world. There is an energy, some call it evil, but that is to misunderstand. It is better to view it as a spirit of error or a "Rogue Mind" which, like a self-destructive subconscious pattern, wrecks havoc with out out world, our external reality, which emanates directly from within where we do not yet understand what reality actually is. It is our duty and our destiny to conquer our own "demons" and release the spirit of truth which will bring on harmony and peace ultimately as we begin to operate as One. - Dr. Derek Lamar
