Is there any meaning to religion at all? Yes. Religion is the vehicle through which spiritual teaching is kept safe for eons until those who can decipher the secrets within the teaching do. Often a teaching which is too spiritual lives a short time because no one understands it yet because of that it is forgotten and discarded. Christianity is understood by few people yet a deep and real teaching is there to discover. Still, many have benefited from it even as they understand it on various levels. Those who have been held back by believing things in it erroneously would have been held back by something else if not by it. And to those who believe a lot of people have died in the name of religion, usually those people weren't religious but also, far more people have died in the name of atheism as they justify that their brand of secularism should rule the people. Better we keep and support democracy and freedom and continue to allow all thoughts the space to flourish as we seek to discover "truth". ~ Dr. Derek Lamar

The name of Moses means: "drawn out of the water," and water is the symbol of the psychic nature. Moses was drawn out of the water by an Egyptian princess, the daughter of Pharaoh. The feminine represents spirituality and the daughter of Pharaoh would represent the highest type of Egyptian spirituality. The Bible states that Moses was "versed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians." The psychic nature is the individual's tie with the race consciousness, and in it are embedded all the inherited instincts, fears, passions, desires, etc. of the race, which are transmitted through the seed. Jacob reached a high state of psychic development and this development was transmitted to his descendants. His descendant, Moses, was lifted out of this psychic, or water, state of development through learning the spiritual wisdom of the Egyptians, typified by the feminine, spiritual Egyptian princess. A policeman on the early morning beat sees a man, obviously drunk, standing under a street lamp and casting about on the ground as if he was looking for something. He parks his cruiser and asks the man "You there! What are you doing?"

"Looking for my keys, ocifer," slurs the drunk. "I lost them and I can't find them."

"I see. And you're certain you lost them under this street lamp?" the officer replies.

"Oh no, sir, I lost them over in that alley. But the light's better over here."

You've likely heard some version of this story before; it's an old one. The joke, of course, lies in the drunk's absurd belief that the better light will somehow help him find his keys. But its not always uncommon for beliefs like this one to get embedded into accepted practice, until no one realizes how absurd they are. (from An Obsession with Measurement)

Emma Curtis Hopkins was one of the most unusual figures that has appeared in the whole metaphysical movement. Originally she had been associated with Mary Baker Eddy as an editor of the Christian Science Journal, but as the two had not seen eye to eye on many questions, Mrs. Hopkins left the Eddy School of Christian Science. From Boston, she went to Chicago where she founded a school of her own, which was probably the most influential school of its kind at the time. Emma Curtis Hopkins was a teacher of teachers. Many founders of metaphysical movements learned their fundamental principles from her. Besides Charles and Myrtle Fillmore there were: Charles and Josephine Barton, who published the magazine "The Life" in Kansas City and had a Truth movement of their own; Melinda Cramer, the first president of the International Divine Science Association; Dr. D. L. Sullivan, who taught Truth classes in St. Louis and Kansas City; Helen Wilmans, editor of "Wilmans Express" and a very influential New Thought teacher at the turn of the century; the popular writer, Ella Wheeler Wilcox; Paul Militz and Annie rix Militz, who founded the Homes of truth on the West Coast; Mrs. Bingham, who taught Nona Brooks, founder of the Divine Science movement in Denver; G. E. (George Edwin) Burnell, a popular lecturer throughout the country for many years; H. Emilie Cady, who studied under Mrs. Hopkins on one of her trips to New York; and many others.
