Quote of the Day

Thursday, April 15th

"Man with his burning soul has built an hour of breath to build a ship of Truth in which his soul may sail, sail on the sea of death; for death takes toll of beauty, courage, youth, of all but Truth." ~ John Masefield (1878-1967) Truth

"Without stirring abroad one can know the whole world; without looking out the window one can see the way of heaven. The further one goes, the less one knows." ~ Lao Tzu (Tao Te Ching)
"We understand lies better than the truth because in falsity we find comfort. Either it is what we believe and that is good or it is a lie and we are better than that. But the Truth? We turn in horror for with it comes change: our undying enemy. Peace is beyond change and we must get there through a transformation so we tremble. We ask ourselves: 'Should we face the lie or become its friend?' Peace is such a short distance to travel but it is on the other side of change: our undying enemy. We make our decision. We do not change. We turn and look upon the lie with contempt and yet we lean against the wall of change, this side of peace, and we weep." ~ Derek Lamar

"It is love alone by which responsive love is awakened, or on account of which love is felt in return. Ultimately, therefore, it is the love of God for man, and that alone, which redeems the man; because that love alone calls forth in return that love of man for God, by which the man's whole nature is transformed. But to be efficacious in man, it must be appropriated by man, that is, believed in and reciprocated by conscious acts of will." ~ S.H.Hodgson (1832-1912) The Metaphysic of Experience

"The day will come when, after harnessing space, the winds, the tides, and gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, we shall have discovered fire." ~ Pierre Teilhard De Chardin

"The road to spiritual enlightenment that one seeks is always the clear path. To find a clear path one must first get out of the way." ~ Derek Lamar (A Clear Path)

"If the soul knows God in his creatures, that is only evening light; if it knows His creatures in God, that is morning light: but if it know God as He who alone is Being, that is the clear light of midday." ~ Meister Eckhart (1260-1327) Works

"Is Life something we are involved with or running away from? Is sexuality a way of discovering ourselves or are we hiding from who we are afraid we are? Do we work to survive or is work a way of hiding from real risk? Do we love people or only hope they love us? Are we mad when people are dishonest with us and then we cannot be honest enough to tell them? Why do we make rules for our children when we do not follow our own? If we really believed in God would we spend so some time doing things without thinking of God? Is being spiritual embarrassing because we are ignorant or really because we think it somehow makes us seem weak? Are we afraid to be alone or to be with ourselves? If we could have anything why is it usually money we ask for and not enlightenment? Why do we think it's so damn smart to be so stupid?" ~ Derek Lamar

"The usual conception of God as one single being outside of the world and behind the world is not the beginning and the end of religion. It is only one manner of expressing God, seldom entirely pure and always inadequate." ~ Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) On Religion

What a good day for a birthday!

"The name of this infinite and inexhaustible depth and ground of all being is God. That depth is what the word God means. And if that word has not much meaning for you, translate it, and speak of the depths of your life, of the source of your being, of your ultimate concern, of what you take seriously without any reservation. Perhaps, in order to do so, you must forget everything traditional that you have learned about God, perhaps even the word itself. For if you know that God means depth, you know much about him. You cannot then call yourself an atheist or unbeliever. For you cannot think or say: Life has no depth! Life is shallow. Being itself is surface only. If you could say this in complete seriousness, you would be an atheist; but otherwise you are not. He who knows about depth knows about God." ~ Paul Tillich (1886-1965) The Shaking of the Foundations

"The world is full of wonders, riches, powers, puzzles. What it holds can make us horrified, sorrowful, amazed, confused, joyful. But nothing in it can make us bored. Boredom is the result of some pinch in ourselves, not of some lack in the world." ~ Toni Flores

"My wife and I went out for a ride today. It was in the mountains nearby with hills and cows... we both love animals... we took some bread and cheese... some cake.... and sliced apple.... we watched the cows and occasionally a car would speed by cutting through the moment, but as I sat imagining the Beingness of the cow, I realized that they were just experiencing their own beingness, as was I. And I looked out the window at the gravel and dirt below and realized, of course, that all is consciousness and as consciousness even the rocks and gravel and dirt was aware of itself as beingness and that through all consciousness this beingness was aware of itself as One.... and I held that in my mind for a moment... a sort of I AM.... as in the mystical moment of doing "no work" but just BEING...... we talked about it and after watching a coyote cross a hill and the crows fly about for a time we turned around and headed for home... Just a half a mile or so there was another herd of cows and it was a really good view with a pull off so I pulled the car over. After a moment they started to move. I felt sad because I wanted to watch them but they started heading off back toward the hill where we had just come from... as they got to the area where we were, to our amazement, rather than continuing on their journey like I thought they were doing, they turned and headed straight for the fence where we were. There was probably 80 of them. And then the ones in the back, in the distance, started to gallop toward the fence. They all came right up to the fence and stared at us with complete cow Beingness at hand. It was a marvelous moment. We loved them as we looked into their eyes. After about 15 minutes they started to break up and went back to what they had been doing like nothing had happened. But something had happened. God was there." ~ Derek Lamar

"Isolation is aloneness that feels forced upon you, like a punishment. Solitude is aloneness you choose and embrace. I think great things can come out of solitude, out of going to a place where all is quiet except the beating of your heart." ~ Jeanne Marie Laskas

"In Japan we have the phrase shoshin, which means 'beginner's mind.' This does not mean a closed mind, but actually an empty mind and a ready mind. If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything. It is open to everything. In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities; in the expert's mind there are few." ~ Shunryu Suzuki

"It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance." ~ Thomas Sowell

"Before you can win you have to believe you are worthy." ~ Mike Ditka

"The greatest thing you can do is surprise yourself." ~ Steve Martin

"Pizza. Has there ever been a more perfect manifestation of God than pizza? Truly if you want to introduce someone to spirituality, take them out for pizza. If they have never had pizza you will witness an automatic conversion. Let them baptize it in Parmesan cheese. Add maybe just a touch of salt or a few of those ground hot peppers on the table. If it is not in a restaurant and you are popping it into your own oven add some fennel and maybe a little extra oregano. Hell throw on some basil too. And while we are talking about pizza, have you ever had it with ricotta cheese and spinach? Mother of God! There are other religions people have tried to make out of pizza with pineapple or peanut butter, some without red sauce, mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, but really, even at that, God can be found anywhere, but pizza is like living in God's kitchen! Caio." ~ Derek Lamar

" It has finally been discovered that many answers which had been long sought for by philosophers, scientists, spiritual masters and devout truth seekers had been hidden in our very own DNA. And simply by manipulating a couple of the genes this way or that and then replacing one of them with a duplicate or inverted gene from another person of the same blood type, that miraculous things happened. They found that this affected the way in which the blood flowed to the brain and the increase in oxygen along with the rapid deployment of white blood cells in some of the nitrogen deprived areas of the lower rambosis region of the reptilian lobe of the human brain would inevitably restore the metabolic balance to the system. This would cause an automatic loss of weight and a complete release of bodily toxins within 2-3 weeks. Also the aging process seems to be reversing in most people taking them back to the age range of 30 - 35. For those under this age it seems to be slowing the process but it is too soon to tell. Not enough time has elapsed since this discovery. The psychological factor seems to have had tremendous effects as well and the cure of Bi-polar and other schizephrenic types as well as manic depressive behavior and common depression have been eliminated altogether. The compulsions toward alcohol and food are eliminated and in some cases there has actually been a sense of overall well being and self worth being attributed to this medical procedure. For those who have been on all sorts of fad diets or spiritual kicks they will be a little disappointed because this process is so much easier than actual psychological work and looking within but it's nice to know we don't have to face ourselves anymore but instead find a medical procedure which will cure all of our ills. Science is great! Oh yes, and April Fools!" ~ Derek Lamar
