Q.M.I. Presents Derek Lamar's

October 1999

Quote of the Day

Sunday October 31st

"God, to be God, must rule the heart to transform it. He must express Himself in every smallest act of His votary. This can only be done through a definite realization more real than the five senses can ever produce. Where there is realization outside the senses it is infallible. It is proved, not by extraneous evidence, but in the transformed conduct and character of those who have felt the real presence of God within." ~ Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948) The Choice Is Always Ours

"Religion is there to govern man's outer nature, to protect him, his family and others. But his soul dies if it never rises above the human system of thinking and discovers the science of the I AM." ~ Derek Lamar

Friday October 29th

"The original human soul is the oldest thing, more correctly an oldest thing, for it has always been, before time and before form, just as God has always been." ~ Thomas Mann (1875-1955) Joseph and His Brothers
"The human soul, is the essence of man which is the Beingness of God knowing itself in infinite variety discovering itself completely and in miniscule proportions all at the same time, discovering its heights and depths, its highs and lows, its newness and its eternity all as ONE." ~ Derek Lamar

Thursday October 28th

"I watched an old Star Trek: Next Generation last night. The one where Data created himself... a daughter. She lived only a short while but in her short time had surpassed her... father. She became capable of love. She told Data that she loved him and he was "sad" that he could not return the expression. She said that it was okay, that she would love for the both of them. I thought of my own parents, incapable of love, and I cried." ~ Derek Lamar

"God walks with the humble; he reveals himself to the lowly; he gives understanding to the little ones; he discloses his meaning to pure minds, but hides his grace from the curious and proud." ~ Thomas À Kempis (1380-1471) The Imitation of Christ

Grace continues...

Tuesday October 26th

"There is that within every individual which partakes of the nature of the universal wholeness and in so far as it operates, is God; that is the meaning of the word Emmanuel, the meaning of the word Christ. There is that within us which partakes of the nature of the Divine Being, and since it partakes of the nature of the Divine Being, we are divine. It reacts to us according to our belief in it and it is an immutable law, subject use by the least among us; no respecter of persons, it cannot be bound." ~ Ernest Holmes (Religious Science, 1932)

Monday October 25th

"All one needs to know to answer their questions or problems is that they are God. There is no set amount of times one must say this to themselves... but we spend most of our time in denial of this Truth. It is time we change." ~ Derek Lamar

Sunday October 24th

"All the myriad of voices within our mind and within our soul are all from our consciousness. But we must test what we hear by our own ability to interpret the voices. All we perceive is strained through our filtering systems and not but the perfect being could expect to cognize higher thinking to the degree it is expressed originally. This is why the spiritual path of working on oneself is so important, yea even mandatory." ~ Derek Lamar

Understanding A Step At A Time continues...

Saturday October 23rd

"What could it be said that God could be except all that is. God is the perfect version of what is yet unknown as well as the complete and whole flawless nature of every idea before it is born. God is what we do not yet understand about ourselves and the drive which compels us to forever discover what that is. God is forever just as whatever is true about God must also be so of everything else for there is nothing else." ~ Derek Lamar

Interpretations continue...

Friday October 22nd

"It is the assurance that God is fulfilling us individually as well as Himself, and fulfilling us for ourselves as well as for Himself, that makes human life in this bittersweet world endurable by the sensitively and delicately minded, the tender-hearted believer. It is because a being of the earth, yet so God-like as man, could not be moulded into the image of God save from within himself, as a person or a free agent, that man can account the payment of the sometimes exorbitant price of learning love inevitable." ~ F.R. Tennant (1866-1957) Philosophical Theology

"When you see the shadows in your life which cause the most darkness you must stand in them until the great light which is being hidden finally shines through." ~ Derek Lamar

"The end of a pattern is the beginning of change. Change is the unfoldment of more of that which is and always has been. It is the seeing of the infinite variety from which springs forth the expression of the infinity of Truth." ~ Derek Lamar
"And may we find, when ended is the page, death but a tavern on our pilgrimage." ~ John Masefield (1878-1967) The Word
"Death is change. It is the transition from one expression to the next without missing a beat. Life goes on, life is eternal." ~ Derek Lamar
"When the hour of man's departure hence arrives, nothing will save him from it. If he had the wings of an eagle and could soar high up above the earth, he would, of his own accord, come down to meet his fate. Death is a new gate for the righteous to enter in." ~ The Midrash

Tuesday October 19th

"Habits and patterns are not bad. Truth, Reality, Consciousness, Beingness, Love are cycles of out and back forever repeating themselves and this is ongoing GOOD. Habits and patterns which serve a purpose for a season and then change is necessary to move on to the next level, these must be altered at a conscious level. A habit is only negative when it controls you rather than you it." ~ Derek Lamar

Change continues...

Monday October 18th

"Ritual is only good if the habit takes one out of a habit. This is the real point to ritual. This is the reason for traditions and for celebrations. Why have a set time to pray only to mechanically say a prayer every night before you go to sleep? The point to ritual is to create a habit where you are not mechanical and you can step outside of yourself for a short time until eventually your whole life is filled with spontaneity and freedom and choices and opportunities which allow one's Beingness to soar and be alive." ~ Derek Lamar

Awakeness continues...

Sunday October 17th

"Do not say any more that your soul is united to your body more intimately than to anything else; since its immediate union is with God alone, since the divine decrees are the indissoluble bonds of union between the various parts of the universe and of the marvelous network of all the subordinate clauses." ~ Nicolas Malebranches (1638-1715) Dialogues on Metaphysics and Religion

Saturday October 16th

"O we can wait no longer, we too take ship, O soul, joyous we too launch out on trackless seas, fearless for unknown shores on waves of ecstasy to sail, amid the wafting winds (thou pressing me to thee, I thee to me, O soul), caroling free, singing our song of God, chanting our chant of pleasant exploration." ~ Walt Whitman (1819-1892) Passage To India

Friday October 15th

"It has been said that a person's dream is the way to their soul. But we have so many opinions about reality. We think dreams are weird because they are not linear like the world we live in within our wake state, but who is to say which is more real, the dream from our unconscious or the conscious interpretation of what is happening. Perhaps each is a journey to discover the self. The dream is a symbolic landscape painted by the brush of one's imagination. It is not how we think, it is what we think. Our feelings and thoughts have pictures and each of our pictures has thoughts and feelings. Within this kaleidoscopic adventure lies a world just waiting to be discovered." ~ Derek Lamar (DreamScape 21: Mapping The Mind, Body & Soul)

Infinite Variety continues...

Thursday October 14th

"He who sees the Infinite in all things, sees God." ~ Richard Hooker (1554-1600) The Law of Ecclesiastical Polity
"Equally perceiving the supreme mind in all beings, and all things in the supreme mind, the true worshiper sacrifices his own spirit by fixing it on the Spirit of God, and approaches the nature of the One, who shines by his own effulgence." ~ The Code of Manu
"Of this I am certain: if a soul understood the smallest thing that has isness, it would not turn away from it for an instant. The tiniest thing that one knows in God -- if one even knew a flower, so far as it has its isness in God -- that would be nobler than the whole world." ~ Meister Eckhart (1260-1327) Works

Wednesday October 13th

"God's never tied man's salvation to any pattern. Whatever possibilities inhere in any pattern of life inhere in all, because God has given it so and denied it to none. One good way does not conflict with another, for not all people may travel the same road." ~ Meister Eckhart (1260-1327) Talks of Instruction

Tuesday October 12th

"It has been said that man is created in the image of God. And yet we have forever attempted to discover what God is like by studying his creation. We muse that if man is created in the image and likeness of God, what must God be like? And we set out to paint a picture of God with the brush we have found in our own hands. With paint dripping we continue to exclaim that God is very much like ourselves and his attributes are the ones we understand to be those we aspire to ourselves even without understanding who we are. We do ourselves and God a great disservice by approaching Him with such ignorance for it is we who are created in the image of God if we but understand this mystery. Jesus said one must worship God in spirit and in truth. But what do we know of this spirit and what has been determined about truth. We still pull back, those of us more intellectually astute, and cry out, what is truth? Yet Truth is what God is and all else is meaningless. We must understand what is so and know that that is Truth for Truth is that which is so. It is not important to predetermine what Truth is by our world around us, we must first determine what the definition of Truth is and then hold that up to what we know about the testimony of our senses. We all agree that what we call truth must be what one would say was so or true no matter what that is. Forget all of the manmade versions of this statement, this creation, relax and know that God is Reality and once you come into contact with that Reality, you have entered into what is so. You can narrow down your world to what is true and what is not true. If Truth is that which is so then you must know that that which is not true is not so. Therefore Truth is all there is because that which "is not" can of its own definition be nonexistent. Once you realize that Truth is all there is you have begun your journey because ALLNESS is understood as ONENESS. This Oneness will determine many things for you but we shall begin here." ~ Derek Lamar

Oneness continues...

Monday October 11th

"Sometimes it is good to look at life as if it is just your thoughts reflecting back to you your world because you can only see your world through that filtering system of the self and everything is colored by how you think and feel. But beyond that perspective is the moment where you realize that it really is all just Consciousness and it is only your consciousness. This hell with flickers of heaven and moments of boredom, an adventure here, a trial there, a little success and a disappointing failure, love and hate, acceptance and rejection, all of it, all of it residing within you. You exist here, this is your world, your consciousness. Once you accept this and see it for what it is you can change it. How can you change what is? This isn't what is. This is only how you see what is. It is consciousness, yes, but now you must see what is the Truth behind Consciousness. What is Reality. What is the perspective once you realize that all is ONE. What is the Reality which resides in the state of consciousness of Oneness. Follow me my thoughts for I love you and we shall travel together." ~ Derek Lamar

Love continues...

Sunday October 10th

"If God holds our hand as we enter this world, why are we so fragile that we form conclusions over hurt feelings and lost love forever to blame it on above? It is a sad moment when we recoil from our journey and our toil out of fear rather than awe as we encounter it all. But alas in a moment, in a twinkling of an eye, we turn and raise our sights to a star in the sky, and as we seem to lift ourselves and peer out all around, we know that past confusion was illusion which abounds, we exhale a heavy sigh and turn to walk away but we are pulled again more closely and told not to turn away but to look deep inside and forgive ourselves as well, for as sure as we came from heaven there is no reason we live in hell." ~ Derek Lamar

"English is a Crazy Language"

Let's face it -- English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England nor French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why it is that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? If you have one goose, two geese, why not one moose, two meese, or one index, two indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend, or that you can comb through the annals of history but not a single annal? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? If you wrote a letter, perhaps you bote your tongue? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital; ship by truck and send cargo by ship; have noses that run and feet that smell; park on driveways and drive on parkways? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and wise guy are opposites, and quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another?
Have you noticed that we talk about certain things only when they are absent? Have you ever seen a horsefull carriage or a strapfull gown; met a sung hero or experienced requited love; have you ever run into someone who was combobulated, gruntled, or peccable? And where are all those people who ARE spring chickens or who would ACTUALLY hurt a fly?
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm clock goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race (which of course, isn't a race at all). That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when they lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I windup this essay, I end it? ~ Source: Unknown (contributed by Ramon A. "Death does not hold us in its grasp for it is an illusion. Life holds us for it is us. As we hold our Self we breath out and inhale that which is the soul of Reality. In this breeze we discover Oneness. We have life and death but death is a line which cannot be measured for it does not have depth, nor length nor width. It only marks the spot where one life ends and another life begins. In this sense death is the heralding of new life just as change is the bell which rings the infinite variety which breaths new life into the ancient wisdom that is our soul." ~ Derek Lamar

"This is the resurrection spirit. This is the reality of the Ascended Consciousness. "Of myself I can do nothing, but of Him in whom I believe, all things are possible." Surely the gloriousness of this promise has been made real to you if you have kept the sacred rendezvous. The actual realization of what takes place in your mind and body is the thing that cannot be described. I would call your attention to the fact that mysterious inner action takes place and is the natural accompaniment of discipline and meditation. Its revelation must be yours, however, and while you may not be conscious of it at the time, the full glory will break upon you as you gradually awaken from the sleep of race consciousness concerning the words "physical", "disease", and "death". ~ Eloi~Sun (Old Wine In New Bottles)1936 Honolulu, Hawaii

A questioner says: You can experience yourself if you do certain things, you can have a method. To which Krishnamurti responds: "No, Sir, there is no method. We are not showing you a method at all, we are learning. Learning is not a method; you can learn through a method, but it only conditions the mind to that particular system. If you are learning, you observe. If you observe that one system conditions the mind and makes it mechanical, then all systems are the same; you learn what a system does. Through some system you can have a most extraordinary experience, but it is still a very limited experience -- this is so obvious." ~ Krishnamurti (The Impossible Question)

"Evil did not originate with anyone, anywhere, at any time. No one is guilty of its inception. There is no evil, for God is all. In this Light we see Light -- not by looking as man or to man, finite opinion, humanhood, but by looking as Mind, our Self, upon all that This Conscious Life, Identity, I-Am-Intelligence, includes. We need do nothing. The infinite Present god is already all of all -- what can possibly be added to make Perfection more complete? We do not have to make Life become Life. We do not have to let Consciousness be Consciousness. Love is already Love. God does not wait for "our" (man, human, mortal, personal) decisions, permissions, nor does God know aught of carnal repudiations, rebellions, refusals, tantrums or denials. God is one God, All Intelligence, All Presence, All Identity and Mind knows this to be Eternal Truth." ~ Alfred Aiken (That Which Is)

"Thou who hast given me eyes to see, and love this world so fair, give me a heart to find out Thee, and read Thee everywhere." ~ John Keble (1792-1866)
"A man does not become a Brahmana by his plaited hair, by his family, or by both; he is blessed in whom there is truth and righteousness; he is a Brahmana." ~ Gautama Buddha (563-483 B.C.)
"At fifteen my mind was bent on learning; at thirty, I stood firm; at forty, I was free from delusions; at fifty, I understood the will of God; at sixty, my ears were receptive to the truth; at seventy, I could follow the promptings of my heart without overstepping the boundaries of right." ~ Confucius (551-479 B.C.)
"To find God is but the beginning of wisdom, because then for all our days we have to learn his purpose with us and to live our lives with him." ~ H.G. Wells (1866-1946)
"The courage to be is rooted in the God who appears when God has disappeared in the anxiety of doubt." ~ Paul Tillich (1886-1965)

"We are born into this world and our parents become our gods. They are the authority and controllers over life and death and we submit totally to them until we begin to sense our own self from them. This is the beginnings of pain and anguish. This testing of the parents creates an atmosphere of wrestling for control long before the child can actually be independent and yet his sense of self is so intense he feels his individuality within him is about to explode. Unfortunately the parents do not understand this and often abuse begins here because they take all of this personal, they feel they need to reign in the child, there are a thousand messages being sent and received which are contradictory and explosive but ultimately the amount the child has rebelled is probably proportionate to the intensity of his sense of self. His understanding of God as only his parents at this time is something which will need to be dealt with the rest of his entire life. And all of us can look back and discover in our own wrestling with certain spiritual ideas that our early upbringing and certain anthropomorphic concepts of God all become a mish mash of confusion which need to be sorted through and sifted in such a way that the chaff is dropped to the side and the light is allowed to shine through. This will help in the raising of Consciousness to the next level." ~ Derek Lamar

"We are not aliens in a strange universe governed by an outside God; we are parts of a developing whole, all enfolded in an embracing and interpenetrating love, of which we too, each to other, sometimes experience the joy too deep for words." ~ Sir Oliver Lodge (1851-1940) Man and the Universe
"To look upon the world as undivine is a speculative aberration. God is not jealous of his own works. The world is an abyss of nothingness, if we take away its roots in the Divine." ~ Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975) Fragments of a Confession

"After long study and experience, I have come to the conclusion that (1) all religions are true; (2) all religions have some error in them; (3) all religions are almost as dear to me as my own Hinduism, in as much as all human beings should be as dear to one as one's own close relatives. My own veneration for other faiths is the same as that for my own faith; therefore no thought of conversion is possible. The aim of the Fellowship should be to help a Hindu to become a better Hindu, a Mussalman to become a better Mussalman, and a Christian a better Christian. Our prayer for others must be not "God, give him the light thou hast given me," but "Give him all the light and truth he needs for his development." Pray merely that your friends may become better men, whatever their form of religion." ~ Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948) Selected Addresses
